Bobble Stitch

This stitch pattern has so much texture and character, it is one of my favorite stitches! I love other unique stitches that add texture like the popcorn stitch and the puff stitch, but the bobble stitch really has my heart!

One thing to keep in mind when working with the bobble stitch is your bobbles will naturally pop out on the wrong side of the work, or the back of your stitches. Whenever you want your bobbles to be on the right side of the work, you may need to turn your work before starting your bobble row.

The Bobble Stitch is used in so many of my free crochet patterns! Check them out below. (Click the photo to go to the free pattern!)

I will be using a 5.0 mm crochet hook for this tutorial.

Abbreviations (US terms)
ST – Stitch
YO – Yarn Over
SC – Single Crochet
CH – Chain

If you want to follow along, create a starting chain of any length and place a single crochet in the 2nd CH from your hook. This will be your first stitch.

  • YO, insert your hook into the next ST.
  • Grab your yarn, pull up a loop.
  • YO, pull through two loops. (Two loops left on hook)
  • YO, insert hook into same ST.
  • Grab your yarn, pull up a loop.
  • YO, pull through two loops. (Three loops left on hook)
  • YO, insert hook into same ST.
  • Grab your yarn, pull up a loop.
  • YO, pull through two loops. (Four loops left on hook)
  • YO, insert hook into same ST.
  • Grab your yarn, pull up a loop.
  • YO, pull through two loops. (You just created your final loop and should have five loops left on hook)
  • YO, pull through all five loops.

To complete your Bobble Stitch, place a SC in the next ST.
