I can’t believe summer is almost over and kids are already going back to school. Time has just flown by! In the spirit of going back to school, I thought it would be fun to make a pencil pillow and give it out as my FIRST FREE PATTERN! You guys have all been so amazing in supporting me as my business switches from making crochet items, to designing and creating crochet patterns. I never thought I would be selling my crochet patterns. I get butterflies every time I look down at my phone and see another pattern was purchased from my Etsy shop; I am honored you guys like them. As a thank you for being so awesome, please enjoy this free Crafty Pencil Pillow Pattern (say that 10 times fast ????).

Stitch Key (US Terms)
SC = Single Crochet
CH = Chain
INC= Increase (Put two stitches in the same space. In this case, it will be two SC stitches.)
YO= Yarn over
DEC= Decrease (insert your hook, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, YO and pull through 3 loops)
DEC 3 Together= Decrease over the next 3 stitches. (insert your hook, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, YO and pull through 4 loops)
SL ST= Slip Stitch
*= To Be Repeated

Special Stitches

Bobble: *YO, Insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on your hook* Repeat 3 more times. Now you should have 5 loops on your hook. YO and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

Back Bump: This is where you flip your starting chain over and insert your hook into the “back bump” of the chain and place your stitch there. If you are unfamiliar with this technique I would suggest watching this tutorial below by Fiber Flux on YouTube . You do not have to use this technique, you can just single crochet as you normally would, but I feel like the back bump technique is cleaner. Click HERE to watch a YouTube video on how to crochet in the Back Bump.

How to change colors: Work your SC as normal but stop right before finishing the stitch, with 2 loops on your hook. Pick up your next color and Pull it through the 2 loops on your hook, CH 1 and turn. Continue crocheting with your new color. Click HERE to watch a YouTube video on how to change colors.

Join

Now it’s time to join your back and front pieces. Place your pieces on top of each other (right sides facing out) and line up your stitches.

Attach your pink yarn in the bottom right corner of your eraser.

Start SC and make sure your hook goes through both the front and back pieces.

When you get to the last stitch before the gray part of the pencil, switch to your gray yarn.

Do this every time you reach a new color section of the pencil. Put 3 SC in all the corners (the two eraser corners and the tip of the lead) to ensure smooth edges.

Once you get to the other corner of the eraser, sew in all your loose ends. I like to pull my ends to the inside of my pillow and flip my pillow inside when I sew in my ends.

After you get your ends sewn in and flipped your pillow back to right side out,  it’s time to stuff your pillow.

Once your pillow is stuffed, continue crocheting the front and back pieces of the pillow together by going around the eraser, closing the pillow up. You may need to add more stuffing as you do this. Once you are back to where you started, join into your first SC and tie off. Sew in your last end and TADA!!!! You have finished a Crafty Pencil Pillow!
