If there’s one thing I know about crocheters it’s that most of us are cat people. Its makes sense because we both like to play with yarn.

My daughter Ava is the cat whisperer, I swear. Ever since she was a baby cats would just peacefully lay in her arm anytime she wanted.

The Bitty Kitty Bag was designed back in 2017, inspired by my daughter’s love for cats and kittens.

Since Halloween is just around the corner, and every little witch needs a crochet black cat purse to complete their outfit, I thought now would be the perfect time to release an updated version of the crochet cat bag pattern.

This crochet bag pattern is very similar to the popular Bitty Boho Bag. If you haven’t checked out that free crochet pattern give it a look, you’ll probably love it!

The main difference between this crochet cat bag pattern and the original Bitty Boho Bag pattern is, for this bag, I made it a little bigger to make more room for the kitty face.

Also, it’s made using all single crochet stitches instead of bobble stitches on the front.

If you would like to support my shop you can purchase the ad-free version of the pattern here.

I have created a full video tutorial for my fellow visual learners. Sometimes it’s fun to watch the video while you crochet, it feels like we’re crocheting together!

Finished Bag Sizing: Pouch is about 4.25” tall and 4.25” wide. The full height of the purse (from strap to bottom) is about 14.25 inches.

Here’s what you will need to make your own Bitty Boho Bag

MATERIALS

-G (4 mm) Crochet Hook
-Scissors
-Worsted Weight Yarn (3-4 oz needed) I used Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek in the color Silver Gray.
– Scrap yarn for nose and whiskers
 Tapestry Needle

STITCH KEY (US TERMS)

SC = Single Crochet
CH = Chain
YO= Yarn Over
INC= Increase -Put two stitches in the same space. (In this case, it will be two SC stitches.)
SL ST= Slip Stitch
FSC= Foundation Single Crochet
*= To Be Repeated

SPECIAL STITCHES

Back Bump: This is where you flip your starting chain over and insert your hook into the “back bump” of the chain and place your stitch there. If you are unfamiliar with this technique I would suggest watching the video that goes with this pattern.

Foundation Single Crochet: This technique is really a time saver once you get the hang of it! Your row of single crochet will have more give than it would if you made a chain first and just single-crocheted back down. This technique will be explained within the pattern.

Crochet Cat Bag Pattern

Body– Front

Make a slip knot and CH 10

Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook and SC 8 in the “back bump” of the chain. SC 6 in the last chain then SC 8 back down the other side of the starting chain. CH 1, turn. (22)

If you do not know how to crochet into the back bump of a chain you can SC as you normally would. If you want to see the back bump method please refer to the youtube tutorial that goes with this pattern.

Row 2: SC 8, INC in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (28)

Row 3: SC 28. CH 1, turn (28)

Row 4: SC 8, *INC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (34)

Row 5: SC 34. CH 1, turn (34)

Row 6: SC 8, *INC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (40)

Row 7: SC 40. CH 1, turn (40)

Row 8: SC 8, *INC, SC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (46)

Row 9: SC 46. CH 1, turn (46)

Tie off and sew in all your tails.

Crochet Cat Bag Face

Thread your nose color yarn onto your tapestry needle and insert it where you want the bottom tip of your kitty nose to be.

Pull yarn through (making sure to leave a tail) and place the yarn where you think the right side point of the nose should go.

Insert needle into the bag and pull through (not too hard)

Now insert your needle up from the back of the bag, symmetrical to where you just put your last stitch, creating the left side point of your kitty nose.

Pull yarn through till taut then insert back into the bottom point of the nose.

Come back up through the top right point and then insert into the top left point, closing the top of our nose triangle.

Make sure the back of your work is staying need and your tail isn’t getting all messy.

Now you have the triangle outline of your nose.

Begin “coloring in” the triangle with your yarn.

If you would like to see this process in detail be sure to check out the video tutorial that goes with this pattern.

Now let’s make our whiskers.

To create our crochet cat bag whiskers, we will be using the surface slip stitch method. I will explain how to do it here but again if you need more help please refer to the video.

Insert your hook near the top right corner of your nose.

Grab your yarn from the back and pull up a loop.

Insert your hook into the face of your cat back in the direction you want your whisker to go.

Grab your yarn and pull it through.

Continue inserting your hook into the face and pulling up yarn until your first whisker is finished. Mine was 5 stitches long.

To tie off, cut your yarn and pull it through to the front of your bag. Use your hook to grab the tail and pull it back through to the bottom. Sew in both tails.

Repeat until you have all 6 whiskers.

Ears- Make 2

The ears are made working in the round. This means we will not be joining and chaining up after each row. You may need a stitch market to help you keep track of your round count.

Round 1: SC 6 into a magic circle. (6)

Round 2: Inc, SC 5 (7)

Round 3: SC 3, INC, SC 3 (8)

Round 4: SC, INC, SC 6 (9)

Tie off leaving a long tail for attaching your cat ears to your bag. Sew in your first tail.

Body– Back

Make a slip knot and CH 10

Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook and SC 8 in the “back bump” of the chain. SC 6 in the last chain then SC 8 back down the other side of the starting chain. CH 1, turn. (22)

Row 2: SC 8, INC in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (28)

Row 3: SC 28. CH 1, turn (28)

Row 4: SC 8, *INC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (34)

Row 5: SC 34. CH 1, turn (34)

Row 6: SC 8, *INC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (40)

Row 7: SC 40. CH 1, turn (40)

Row 8: SC 8, *INC, SC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (46)

Row 9: SC 46. CH 1, turn (46) Do not cut your working yarn.

Strap

The strap of our crochet cat bag is made using the Foundation Single Crochet Method.

Insert your hook into the body of the last SC you just made, pull up a loop,

Grab your yarn and pull through one loop (this is where we will insert our hook for the next SC), grab your yarn and pull through 2. That was 1 FSC.

Insert hook into the space we made in the previous FSC.

YO, Pull through one (this is where we will insert our hook for the next SC), YO pull through 2. That was the 2nd FSC.

Keep going until you get 100 FSC.

Tip: If you want a longer strap, FSC more than 100 stitches. If you want a shorter strap, FSC less than 100 stitches.

If you are a visual learner and need extra help with this technique please refer to the video that goes with this pattern.

Once you get your 100 FSC stitches it’s time to join into the back piece of your bag. Make sure your FSC isn’t twisted, and insert your hook into the top of the first SC from Row 9 of the back body piece, SL ST. CH 1

Now we are going to attach the front piece.

Line your front piece on top of the back, kitty facing out.

Insert your hook through that first SC on the front piece and the corresponding SC on the back piece (where you just put your SL ST) and do a SC.

SC all the way around, going through both the front and back pieces. (46)

DO NOT CUT YARN.

SC around the brim of your bag to give it a clean edge. You will have to make your own spot for your stitches to go since this is the raw edge of your work.

For me this was 38 sc’s.

Tie off and sew in your tails.

Attaching crochet cat bag ears

Thread the tail of your first kitty ear on your tapestry needle.

Line up where you want your first ear to go and begin sewing it on using the whip stitch.

Repeat for the second ear.

I love this pattern! Thank you for sharing (free too!). I am 81 years old and learned to crochet when I was 74, so I appreciate easy and quick patterns… I mostly make items for children around the country as well as in our church. God bless. Sharon

  3. Andrea says:

I am stuck on Row 4: SC 8, *INC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 8. CH 1, turn. (34) I sc 8, then did 2 stitches in the next 6, for the “inc, sc, and then 8 more sc, and it does not complete the row. Am I misunderstanding?
