For all of you who want to learn how make your own yarn color chart from scratch let’s get started.

Catch the step by step video tutorial on this process below 🙂

Go to Canva.com

Create a custom size, and select 8.5 X 11 inches. This will take up a full sheet of paper.

If you want to create this for an Etsy listing photo you will want to create it 2,000 X 1,500 PX (Pixels).

Once you selected your size and started your design, the first step is to create a border.

Use the menu on the left-hand side and select “Elements”, type “border” in the search bar.

Use the “graphics” tab an explore borders. I recommend keeping it simple! The main focus should be the yarn 😉

Choose the border you like best and place it on the canvas.

Now to create the title. Click “Text” on the left-hand side menu. Pick your font, I like to use “Anton”.

Type in your business name. Center it at the top, and play around with the font size until it looks good!

Add another text box, that says something like “Yarn Color Chart”. Place that right under your business name.

Go back to the “Elements” tab, and search “Frame”. Choose whatever shape/style of frame you want. This will be what you use to put the yarn color inside.

I went simple and chose a circle.

You can make them as big or small as you would like. Once you get the size you want, you can copy/paste it to create multiple of the same frame.

Do this until you have the amount you need for each color you want to showcase.

Pro-tip- if you want to move all your frames to ensure they are centered- you can hold down your shift key and click on each frame. That will highlight them all, then you can move them as a group!

Be sure to leave enough space between each frame so you can include a text box with the yarn color name.

Add a text box or copy/paste the text box you used for your “yarn color chart”.

Drag the text box below your frame and type your yarn color info.

Copy and paste that text box so you have a text box below each frame.

Use your “position” button in the upper right-hand corner to help you center all your frames and text boxes.

If you have more than one line of yarn that you use, maybe one cotton brand and one acrylic brand, and you want to use this chart again you can simply click the duplicate button.

If you create a duplicate you will have a fresh template you can use over and over again.

Time to grab your yarn photos!

Go to the website of the yarn that you want to showcase. Save the photos of the colors you want to use.

Remember to keep these organized. I like to save each picture by the name of that yarn color. That way it can be searchable if I need to find it in the future.

Hobby Lobby Hack: If you are downloading your photos from the Hobby Lobby website I have a secret for you. If you press the magnifying glass before saving the photo, your photo quality will be better.

I show this step in the video that goes with this tutorial if you’re interested.

Once you have your photos, go back to Canva.

Click the “Uploads” button on the menu to the left. Upload your photos.

Grab your uploaded photo, drag it to a frame and it will autofill in that frame.

You can use the full photo of the skien of yarn, or you can make it zoomed in on the yarn so your customer can really see the color.

To zoom in, double-click the photo and drag the corner to make it larger. Make it so large that within your frame all you can see is the yarn.

When doing this, your full photo will show, but there will only be one area of the photo that is clear, the rest will be kind of greyed out. The clear area is what will be shown in your frame.

Once you have it where you want, you can click out of the photo and that will be what is left in your frame.
