A crochet ghost purse is the perfect crochet Halloween accessory for spooky season! Follow this free crochet pattern to make one today!
Recently I released a new crochet pattern, the Bitty Boho Cactus Bag. This pattern was inspired by the original Bitty Boho Bag.
As usual, my brain went crazy with ideas and I had to turn the little cactus bag into a cute crochet ghost purse for Halloween!
I am obsessed with how it turned out!
The pattern is nearly identical, the only difference being the scalloped trim at the bottom and leaving off the cactus arms.
You can watch the full video tutorial for the cactus version below.

HDC- Half Double Crochet
DC- Double Crochet
CH- Chain
INC- Increase (Put two stitches in the same space. In this case it will be two SC stitches.)
SL ST- Slip Stitch
*- To Be Repeated
Special Stitches
Back Bump: This is where you flip your starting chain over and insert your hook into the “back bump” of the chain and place your stitch there. If you are unfamiliar with this technique I would suggest watching the video that goes with this pattern.
Bobble stitch: *yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook* Repeat 3 more times. Now you should have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook. (Do not chain after this, just go straight into your next stitch)
Magic Circle: If you want to see the magic circle in action be sure to watch the video that goes with this pattern. If you don’t like the magic circle method you can use the CH 2 method instead.
Foundation Single Crochet (FSC): Insert your hook into the side of your last SC. Grab yarn and pull up a loop. YO, pull through one. YO, pull through two. That is your first FSC stitch. Your second stitch will go in the space you made when you pulled through 1.
Finished Dimensions: 18 inches tall.
Crochet Ghost Purse Pattern
Front Piece
Using your white yarn and G crochet hook, Ch 21
Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook, SC 19 going into the BACK BUMP of your chain, 6SC in the last CH st, SC 19 back up the other side of your starting chain. CH 1, turn. (44)
Row 2: SC 19, INC in the next 6 stitches, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (50)
Row 3: *SC, BOBBLE* around. End the row with a SC instead of a Bobble stitch. CH 1, turn. (50)
Row 4: SC 19, *INC, SC* 6 times, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (56)
Row 5: SC 56. CH 1, turn. (56) I call this a GROW ROW.
Row 6: SC 19, *SC, SC, INC* 6 times, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (62)
Row 7: SC in the next stitch, *SC, BOBBLE* around. CH 1, turn. (62)
Row 8: SC 19, *INC, SC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 19. (68)
Since we are working in the raw edge of our work when adding the scalloped trim at the bottom, we have to get a little creative.
I find it’s easiest to put 3 stitch markers where you want your scallops to be.
Start by placing a SC in the side of the last SC from row 8.
Place 6 DC into the stitch with the first stitch marker. This is our first scallop.
SC in the stitch that’s in the middle of your first two stitch markers.
6 DC where your second stitch marker is.
SC in the middle of your second and third stitch markers.
6 DC where your last stitch marker is.
End by placing a SC in the top of the first stitch from row 8.
Do not cut your yarn. Ball off a big chunk and secure it with a small rubberband so you can use it during the assembly process.
Back Piece
The back piece is made just like the front piece but we change out the Bobble Stitch rows for HDC stitches.
Ch 21
Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook, SC 19 going into the BACK BUMP of your chain, 6SC in the last CH st, SC 19 back up the other side of your starting chain. CH 1, turn. (44)
Row 2: SC 19, INC in the next 6 stitches, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (56)
Row 3: HDC around. CH 1, turn. (50)
Row 4: SC 19, *INC, SC* 6 times, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (56)
Row 5: SC 56. CH 1, turn. (56) I call this a GROW ROW.
Row 6: SC 19, *SC, SC, INC* 6 times, SC 19. CH 1, turn. (62)
Row 7: HDC around. CH 1, turn. (62)
Row 8: SC 19, *INC, SC, SC, SC* in the next 6 stitches, SC 19. (68)
Repeat the same steps for the scalloped trim as you did for the front part of the bag.
Cut yarn and tie off.
Crochet Ghost Purse Assembly
Now that you have all the pieces made for your crochet ghost purse, it’s time to assemble them together! This is also the time we will create the strap.
Lay your top piece on your bottom piece, right sides facing out, making sure to line up your scallops.
SC 24 up the right side of your crochet ghost purse. Make sure you go through both the front and back pieces at the same time.
Now we’re going to make our strap.
FSC 100.
If you need help with the FSC check out the special stitches above or the cactus bag video around the 49:00 mark.
Once you finish your strap, it’s time to attach it to the left side.
Skip 20 stitches and attach your strap into the left side of the bag, in the 21st stitch from the right side of your strap.
To attach your strap, insert your hook into the side of your last FSC stitch (like you’re going to make another FSC stitch), insert into the 21st stitch on the front piece, and insert into the 21st stitch on the back piece. YO, pull through all the stitches. You now have 2 loops on your hook. YO, pull through both loops.
SC 23 back down the left-hand side.
Now you are at the scallops.
When joining the scallops together, I like to throw in a couple increase stitches to help it be flat and rounded. It doesn’t matter where you put them or how many you have. I like to avoid putting them near the SC stitches between each scallop though, you mainly what them over the humpy parts.
Once you SC across the bottom of your bag, join into the top of the first assembly SC and tie off.
Sew in all your tails.
Crochet Ghost Purse Eyes
I like to add the eyes by using puff paint. I started using this method a couple of months ago and now it’s my go-to for eyes!
After you paint on the eyes be sure to give it a solid 24 hours to dry. Once dry these will be machine washable and dryable!
There you have it! A super cute crochet ghost purse just in time for spooky season! These would make adorable accessories for little girls wearing all their festive Halloween clothes! You could also fill them with small treats as a fun crochet Halloween gift.
I hope you love this pattern and found it easy to follow. Thank you so much for spending time on acraftyconcept.com today! If you make a ghost purse and post any pics I’d love to see them! You can tag me @ACraftyConcept in all the places.
