How to Crochet a Simple Halter Top- Free Pattern By Jaylee

This simple crochet halter top pattern is perfect for beginners and can easily be adjusted to fit nearly any body type!

Hello! I am Jaylee from Two Arrows Crochet and I am so honored and excited to be sharing this pattern with you on Ashley’s blog! I have been admiring Ashley for so long with her maker mama life and her business.

Jaylee of Two Arrows Crochet

As a mom to a wonderfully sassy 2-year-old and a full-time elementary teacher, Ashley is constantly giving me the motivation to keep on creating and using my ME time as crochet time.

Although it’s hard to balance everything sometimes, I know I’m not alone!

As a crochet designer, I’m so inspired by making garments and wearables. For me, there is no better feeling than telling someone that I made the top that I’m wearing.

I love to find inspiration from Pinterest or clothing sites and try to make it out of yarn and a crochet hook. That is exactly what inspired my Ester Halter Top design.

This simple crochet halter top pattern is perfect for beginners and can easily be adjusted to fit nearly any body type!

I’ve also been really inspired by the makers who’ve been designing their patterns with all body types in mind.

As a woman, my body is constantly changing and I wanted to feel positive about my garments rather than putting a size on it. I’m loving the shift toward body positivity in the maker community right now.

Crochet Halter Top Pattern

The Ester Halter is a customizable design where the size is YOU. By measuring your own body (or the body of the person you’re making for), you will be able to make the top that is a perfect fit for you, or your daughter, or your 90-year-old nana!

Don’t worry, there are math instructions below. This is a beginner-friendly crochet project, perfect for any skill level. Don’t let a little math trip you up!

Want to turn it into a crochet crop top? Easy! Just leave off a few rows and you’re golden.

Crochet summer tops are so fun. They’re great paired with jeans for music festivals, and enjoying long beach days, and are a staple in any summer wardrobe. You could even layer this halter top with a fun jacket or cardigan for chilly spring nights.

Materials

-Lion Brand Heartland yarn (or a comparable yarn, cotton yarn could be fun!)
** Due to the flexible sizing, exact yardage will be hard to determine.**
-6.5 mm (K US crochet hook) for body
-5 mm (H US crochet hook) for accents
-Yarn needle
Scissors
-Tape Measure

You may also need a stitch marker but I didn’t use one.

Notes:
-This crochet top pattern is written in a flexible sizing format. Because of this, gauge isn’t super important.
– Sizing: You will find the size by measuring YOUR body! This size is all YOU!

For reference, I usually wear a size medium in shirts, and I am a 32B. My X and Y values were both 48. (this will make more sense soon)

Front Panel: You will find your beginning row by measuring from just below your armpit over the full bust across to the other side just below your armpit at a comfortable tautness. This will be your “x” (I do this by using a piece of yarn and then measuring the length of the yarn)

Back Panel: You will find your beginning row by measuring just below your right armpit, across the back to just below your left armpit at a comfortable tautness. This will be your “y

** You can officially tell your high school math teacher that you’re using algebra in real life!**

Ch 1 at the end of each row DOES NOT count as a hdc for the next row.

–       The easy crochet halter top will be broken into 4 sections as shown:

This simple crochet halter top pattern is perfect for beginners and can easily be adjusted to fit nearly any body type!

Section 1- Halter Top Crochet Pattern

Row 1: fhdc the width comfortable across your chest from just below your right armpit to just below your left armpit (wherever you want the bottom of your sleeve opening to be)

Count stitches. This is X. ch 1, turn.

Row 2: hdc across. ch 1, turn. (x)

Repeat Row 2 until you’ve reached your desired length.

After a few rows, measure your garment again to make sure that it still measures as X since the fhdc tends to stretch a little. If it has stretched, frog some back to the fhdc and adjust accordingly.

Bottom: hdc2tog. hdc across until 2 stitches left. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn. (x minus 2)

Next Row: Repeat. (x – 4)

Next Row: Repeat. (x – 6)

(This will create a rounded bottom.)

 Tie off. Weave in ends.

Section 2:

At the top of the Section 1 (fhdc row), attach yarn in 3rd st from top right corner. ch 1.

Row 1: hdc2tog. hdc across until 4 st remain. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn. (x – 6)

Row 2: hdc2tog. hdc across until 2 st remain. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn. (x – 8)

Row 3: Repeat Row 2. (x – 10)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (x – 12)

Row 5: Repeat Row 2. (x – 14)

Row 6: Repeat Row 2. (x – 16)

Row 7: Repeat Row 2. (x – 18)

Row 8: Repeat Row 2. (x – 20)

Row 9: Repeat Row 2. (x – 22)

Row 10: Repeat Row 2. (x – 24)

Row 11: Repeat Row 2. (x – 26)

Row 12: Repeat Row 2. (x – 28)

Row 13: Repeat Row 2. (x – 30)

Tie off. Weave in ends.

Section 3:

Row 1: fhdc width comfortable across your back from just below your right armpit to just below your left armpit.

Count stitiches. This is Y. ch 1, turn.

Row 2: hdc across. ch 1, turn. (y)

Repeat Row 2 until you’ve reached your desired length.

(I made mine 4 rows longer than my front panel just based off personal preference)

Bottom: hdc2tog. hdc across until 2 left. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn. ( y – 2)

Next Row: Repeat. (y – 4)

Next Row: Repeat. (y – 6)

Tie off. Weave in ends.

Section 4:

Now it’s time for some math. Take y and divide it by about 4. This is how many stitches you’ll skip to attach your yarn. Attach yarn, ch 1.

This simple crochet halter top pattern is perfect for beginners and can easily be adjusted to fit nearly any body type!

Row 1: hdc2tog. hdc across until you have ¼ of y + 2 st remaining. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn.

Row 2: hdc2tog. hdc across until 2 st remain. hdc2tog. ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 6: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 7: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 8-10: hdc across. ch 1, turn.

Row 11: hdc across.

Tie off. Weave in ends.

Assembly– Crochet Halter Top Pattern

Line up panels so that the right sides are together. Whip Stitch or sc the sides of the top together. (If you want to create a slit at the bottom of your top, leave some rows out of the whip stitching.

Back Straps: Start at the Red X, sc up the side of the front panel. Chain desired length (I chained 25) to create strap. sc down back panel. Sl St to the starting point. Fasten off. [Repeat this for the second strap.]

  1. Robbie Linn says:

I love the idea of this as I like more coverage than most halter tops give. However, I am much larger around my waist/hip area than I am around my bust. Would it be very hard to make it larger at the bottom?
