We will work from the bottom of the beard up to the top of the hat.

Starting with white yarn Chain 11, turn.

Row 1: Insert hook into back bump of the second chain from hook, SC in back bump, SC 9 across, Ch 1, turn. (10)

Row 2: INC in first st, SC 8, INC in the last st. Ch 1, turn. (12)

Row 3: 12 SC. Ch 1, turn. (12)

Row 4: INC in first st, SC 10, INC in the last stitch, Ch 1, turn. (14)

Row 5: 14 SC. Ch 1, turn. (14)

You will see several color changes throughout this pattern. To get clean color changes every time use the following steps:

  • Finish the SC and draw up a loop with the working yarn then take your hook out
  • Insert your hook into the front loop and down through the left side bar of the previous SC
  • Pull up the new color yarn
  • Continue SC into the following stitches

Instead of carrying the beard color throughout every color change, I like to cut a length of white yarn for one side of the face, and then use the rest of the white yarn to work the other side of the face. I drop each side as I pickup the skin colored yarn.

Row 6: INC, change to skin color 12 SC, change to white INC in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (16)

Row 7-9: 2 SC, skin color 12 SC, white 2 SC. Ch 1, turn. (16)

Nose (Time Stamp 30:06)

Thread about 24″ of skin colored yarn into your tapestry needle.

Put your tapestry needle in from the back of your work up to the front of your work, and back down to the back, 3 stitches across the face. Continue this until your nose is the thickness you’d like.

Once your nose is how you like it, make sure you end so your tails are at the back of your work, tie off and sew in your tails.

Bottom Back Piece (Time Stamp 39:51)

Assembly (Time Stamp 57:29)

This Santa gift pocket is assembled with the right sides facing out.

You’ll know your top back piece and the bottom back piece is right side facing out if your tails are on the left hand side of your work.

In order to form the pocket, the top back piece will overlap the bottom back piece by 4 rows of white.

The pocket is assembled with the front piece on the top so that the stitches that attach all the pieces lay on top of the work.

Insert hook from the front piece top left corner stitch into top back piece top left corner and pull working yarn through.

We will be inserting our hooks into Bars and Holes. In the graph you will see a B and an H to represent the bars and holes. As you line up each piece you should be crocheting through a Bar and a Hole at one time. I explain this in detail in the video tutorial that goes with this pattern. (Time Stamp 1:00:00)

SC 2 stitches together in the first SC space where you just joined.

SC into Bar/Hole and Hole/Bar down the side of your work for 10 rows. Drop the hat color to the inside of your work, pickup the white to finish the tenth stitch.

Insert the bottom back piece so that the first 4 rows are under the top back piece. Now there will be 4 stitches that go through all three layers of the gift pocket (front, top back and bottom back). For these 4 stitches it should go Hole, Bar, Bar (and then the opposite as you go) because the back pieces are facing the same direction.
4 SC through all 3 layers.

7 SC through front piece and bottom back piece.

For the bottom there will be 10 stitches that we’ll crochet in. INC in the first stitch, SC 8, INC in the last stitch of the bottom.

Now, working back up the other side of the Santa gift card holder. 7 SC in front and bottom back piece. 4 SC through all three layers. Finishing the fourth stitch through all three layers with the hat color, 10 SC up the side of the hat, INC in each of the stitches on the top of the hat. Tie off. Ideally you would turn your work inside out and sew in all your tails from the inside.

Pro Tip: At this point you could use a Mini Pom Pom maker to make a pom pom and attach it to the top of your Santa hat for an added detail.

Now puff paint your beard and your eyes.

✨Ta-da! ✨ You’re all finished! Now you have a super cute Santa Gift Pocket.
