Crochet Halloween Car Charm – Free Witch Hat & Pumpkin Pattern

Make a crochet Halloween car charm with a mini witch hat and pumpkin! This free crochet pattern is perfect for rearview mirrors or Halloween decor.

Okay, this might be my new favorite way to add a little crochet to spooky season! This crochet Halloween car charm has a mini witch hat on one end and a tiny pumpkin on the other. A simple crochet chain connects the two pieces and creates the loop that hangs around your rearview mirror.

Hang it around your rearview mirror for a cute little pop of Halloween in your car, or use it anywhere you want some small-scale spooky decor. I think it would be adorable hanging from a doorknob, cabinet knob, hook, or even worked into a Halloween display.

And the best part? Both pieces are small, quick crochet projects that don’t use much yarn, making this a great stash-buster too.

If you sell your crochet at fall markets, I think these would also make such a fun addition to your booth. You could make several in different color combinations and let shoppers pick their favorite!

Crochet Halloween Car Charm

This Halloween car charm is made with two tiny crochet pieces: a mini crochet witch hat and a mini crochet pumpkin. Both are made with worsted weight yarn, and a simple chain connects the two, so you don’t need any special hardware to put your car charm together.

The witch hat is worked from the pointed top down to the brim. We’ll switch colors to create the hat band before finishing with two rounds of half double crochet to create that fun, oversized brim.

The pumpkin is worked in continuous rounds and lightly stuffed before being shaped with yarn to create the pumpkin’s humps. We’ll finish it off with a small crochet stem and an optional curly vine.

Once both pieces are finished, we’ll connect them with a simple crochet chain and your Halloween car charm is ready to hang!

Magic Circle: If you are unfamiliar with the Magic Circle/Ring method you are welcome to chain 3, join, and crochet in the circle you created.

Before You Start
To keep the seam fairly straight, we will alternate where we put our first and last stitch in a couple rows. The first SC of each row is in the same stitch as your join, unless otherwise stated. In the rows where you skip the first stitch, your last SC will be squished in next to your starting chain.

Note: I used purple yarn for the witch hat in the tutorial photos so the stitches would be easier to see. Feel free to use black yarn for a more traditional witch hat, or have fun with whatever Halloween color combination you love!

The brim naturally wants to flip upward, so I like to block it to help it lay flatter. Alternatively, crocheting row 13 in the back loop helps the brim turn more downward.

Special Stitches
Magic Circle: If you are unfamiliar with the Magic Circle/Ring method you are welcome to chain 3, join, and crochet in the circle you created.

Magic Fasten Off: Cut your yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle. Insert the needle through the front loop only of each remaining stitch. Pull the yarn tail tight to cinch the opening closed. Secure and weave in your tail.

Before You Start: This crochet pumpkin is worked in continuous rounds, meaning you won’t join or chain at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of each round so you’ll know when you’ve reached the end and are ready to begin the next round.

Round 1: Using your orange yarn, SC 9 into a magic circle. Place stitch marker into the last SC. (9)

Round 9: *DEC, SC* around. (18)

Stuff your pumpkin with polyfill.

Round 10: DEC around. (9)

Tie off leaving a long tail, about 24 inches. You’ll use that to shape your pumpkin. Add any additional polyfill if needed, then close your circle. I like to use the Magic Fasten Off method explained in the Special Stitches section at the beginning of this pattern.

Thread your tail onto a tapestry needle. To shape your pumpkin, insert your needle through the bottom center of the pumpkin and bring it out through the top center. Pull taut, then bring the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin and repeat, pulling the yarn snug each time to create the pumpkin’s humps. Continue around until you have your desired shape. I like for my pumpkins to have 5 humps.

Secure your yarn, tie off, and hide the remaining tail inside the body of the pumpkin.

Set your pumpkin aside and grab your green yarn.

Curly Pumpkin Vine

Adding a curly vine to your pumpkin is optional, but I think it adds the cutest little finishing touch.

Step 1: Using your green yarn, CH 9.

Step 2: Skip the CH closest to your hook and SC 3 in the next CH.

Continue to SC 3 in each of the next 6 CH spaces.

SLST in the last CH space and tie off, leaving a long tail for attaching to your pumpkin. Set your vine aside and grab your brown yarn.

Crochet Pumpkin Stem

Row 1: Using your brown yarn, SC 6 into a magic circle. Join into the top of the first SC. CH 1. (6)

Sew in your first tail.

Row 2: SC around placing your stitch in the BLO. (6)

Note: I like to go directly into Row 3 without joining into the first stitch. This keeps me from having a wonky seam on the stem.

Row 3: SC around, join into the top of your first SC. (6)

Tie off leaving a long tail for sewing your stem onto your pumpkin. Place stem aside and grab your black yarn.

Assemble Your Crochet Halloween Car Charm

Using your black yarn, make a chain that measures about 15″ long. Mine is 74 chain stitches.

Black crochet chain used to connect the pumpkin and witch hat

Thread one end of your chain onto your tapestry needle. Insert your needle through the inside of the stem and bring it out through the top.

Tie a knot at the bottom of your chain to keep the pumpkin from slipping off, then pull the chain through the stem until the knot reaches the inside of the stem.

Knot tied in the crochet chain to keep the pumpkin securely in place

Sew the stem to your pumpkin using the long tail you left when making the stem. Secure with a knot, then hide the remaining tail inside the pumpkin and trim off any excess.

With your chain still threaded onto your tapestry needle, insert your needle through the tip of the witch hat and bring it out through the body. Tie a knot in the chain to keep the witch hat from slipping off, then trim any excess yarn tails.

Using your vine tails, sew the vine onto the pumpkin at the base of the stem. Secure with a knot, hide the tails inside the pumpkin, and trim off any excess.

Adding a jack-o’-lantern face is optional, but it’s an easy way to give your pumpkin a little extra personality! Using black puff paint, add a cute face to the front of your pumpkin, or have fun creating whatever expression you like.

Note: This part can be a little tricky. I find it’s helpful to practice on paper first.

Let the puff paint dry completely before hanging your finished Halloween car charm.

And that’s it! Your crochet Halloween car charm is ready to hang!

Loop it around your rearview mirror to add a little handmade Halloween fun to your car, or use it as a cute curtain tieback! You could also hang it from a doorknob, cabinet knob, hook, or anywhere else that could use a little spooky crochet vibes.
