Bulky Rustic Placemat Materials
9mm Size N hook
106 yards of weight 6 super bulky yarn (recommended Wool Ease Thick and Quick)
4 20mm wood beads (optional)
Stitch Key (US Terms)
- Chain (CH)
- Single Crochet (SC)
- Double Crochet (DC)
- Half Double Crochet (HDC)
V-stitch (V-Stitch)= DC in a stitch, CH 1, DC in the same stitch
2” by 2” = 4 SC across, 3 SC rows
11.5” by 16”
This pattern requires loose tension so that the placemat will lay flat. If the edges of your placemat curl up, it is probably a good indication that your stitches are too tight.
The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch, and is used to key the edges of the placemat straight. When working in a V-Stitch from a previous row, crochet into the CH 1, instead of the space between the two DC.
Optional: Add wood beads to each corner to add a boho element to the placemat.
Crochet Placemat Pattern
Chain (CH) 24.
Row 1: In the second CH from hook, SC. SC in each CH across the row. Turn your work. (23 SC)
Row 2: CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). SC in each stitch across. Turn your work. (23 SC)
Row 3: CH 1 (does not count as a stitch), DC in the first SC. Skip (Sk) the next SC. V-Stitch in second stitch from hook. Sk 2 SC. V-Stitch. Sk 2 SC. V-stitch. Sk 2 SC. V-stitch. Sk 2 SC. V-stitch. Sk 2 SC. V-stitch. Sk 2 SC. V-stitch. Sk the second to last stitch. DC in the last stitch. (7 V-stitches)
See picture below.
Row 4: CH 1. DC in the first stitch of the row. Sk the next two stitches, V-stitch into the CH 1 of the V-stitch.
Pattern Note: I recommend actually completing the stitch in the CH 1, instead of in the space of the V-stitch. See picture below.
Sk the next two stitches. V-stitch into the CH 1 of the next V-stitch from the previous row. Repeat across the row. DC in the last stitch of the row. (7 V-stitches)
Row 5: Repeat Row 4. (7 V-stitches)
Row 6: CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). SC in each stitch across the row. (23 SC)
Row 7: Repeat Row 6. (24 SC) See picture below.
Rows 8-22: Repeat Rows 3-7.
Tie off with a 6” tail. Weave in loose ends.
The border will be worked across the top and bottom of the placemat.
Lay your place mat flat.
In the top right corner slip stitch into the last row of the placemat. CH 1. Half double crochet (HDC) in the top of the stitches across the top. There should be 28-29 HDC when spread equally. Cut off a 6” tail and weave in.
Repeat at the bottom row.
Cut off a 6” tail and weave in.
Optional: Add 20mm wood beads to each corner to create a boho touch to the pattern, like pictured below.
