If you have been looking for a fun crochet pattern for Easter, or even just a fun spring crochet pattern the Bunny Backpack is perfect!

Kids can use these in the place of Easter baskets, or just to carry around their treasures when going from place to place.

When my daughter was little we used to always bring a few toys with us wherever we went so she would have something to keep her occupied. This crochet Bunny Backpack would have been perfect because she could carry her own toys and would feel like a big helper.

Crochet Bunny Backpack Pattern

Materials
Worsted weight yarn in body color and inner ear color and tail color
You will need over 232 yards of body color. I used yarn bee soft and sleek and needed more than one skein but not quite 2.
4.0mm Crochet Hook (for the optional icord strap)
4.5mm Crochet hook
Scissors 
Tapestry Needle
Stitch markers or scrap yarn 
4mm Cotton Rope (for alternative straps)
Pom Pom Maker

Stitch Key (US Terms)
CH= Chain
SC= Single Crochet
HDC= Half Double Crochet
INC= Increase (put two stitches in the same space. In this case, half double crochet stitches)
HDC DEC= Half Double Crochet Decrease
SC DEC= Single Crochet Decrease
SL ST= Slip Stitch

Back Bump: This is where you flip your starting chain over and insert your hook into the “back bump” of the chain and place your stitch there. If you are unfamiliar with this technique I would suggest watching the video that goes with this pattern.

Half Double Crochet Decrease
Yarn over, insert your yarn into the first stitch, pull up a loop. Yarn over, insert your hook into the second stitch, pull up a loop. Yarn over pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

Single Crochet Decrease
Insert your hook into your first stitch, pull up a loop, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over pull through all 3 loops.

Finished Dimensions: 11.25″ tall – 9.25″ wide

Crochet Bunny Backpack Ears

We’re going to start by making the ears. You’re gonna want two 😉

Using your 4.5mm crochet hook and your body yarn color

Chain 11

Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook. HDC 10. Ch 1, turn your work. (10)

Rows 2-4: HDC 10. CH 1, turn your work. (10)

Row 5: INC, HDC 8, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (12)

Rows 6- 8: HDC 12. Ch 1, turn your work. (12)

Row 9: INC, HDC 10, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (14)

Rows 10-12: HDC 14. Ch 1, turn your work. (14)

Row 13: INC, HDC 12, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (16)

Rows 14-20: HDC 16. Ch 1, turn your work. (16)

Row 21: DEC, HDC 12, DEC. Ch 1, turn your work. (14)

Crochet Bunny Backpack Inner Ear

Using your inner ear color- Start by leaving a long tail for sewing your inner ear onto your outer ear. (approximately 3 feet long)

I forgot to do this and had to adjust accordingly. I explain in the video that goes with this pattern.

Chain 7

Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook. HDC 6. Ch 1, turn your work. (6)

Rows 2-4: HDC 6. CH 1, turn your work. (6)

Row 5: INC, HDC 4, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (8)

Rows 6- 8: HDC 8. Ch 1, turn your work. (8)

Row 9: INC, HDC 6, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (10)

Rows 10-12: HDC 10. Ch 1, turn your work. (10)

Row 13: INC, HDC 8, INC. Ch 1, turn your work. (12)

Rows 14-19: HDC 12. Ch 1, turn your work. (12)

Row 20: DEC, HDC 8, DEC. Ch 1, turn your work. (10)

Row 21: HDC 10. Ch 1, turn your work. (10)

Row 22: DEC, HDC 6, DEC. Ch 1, turn your work. (8)

Row 23: HDC 8. Ch 1, turn your work. (8)

Row 24: DEC, HDC 4, DEC. Ch 1, turn your work. (6)

Row 25: HDC 6. Ch 1, turn your work. (6)

Rows 26 and 27 are made with SC stitches.

Row 26: SC DEC, SC 2, SC DEC. Ch 1, turn your work. (4)

Row 28: SC DEC, SC DEC (2)

Center your inner ear onto your outer ear but line up the bottoms.

Sew on by threading your long tail onto a tapestry needle and using the whip stitch.

Crochet Bunny Backpack Pattern- Body

Using your body color yarn and 4.5mm crochet hook

Make a slip knot and CH 41.

Row 1: Skip the back bump closest to your hook, SC 40 in each back bump. CH 1, turn. (40)

Rows 2-9: SC 40. CH 1, turn. (40)

Tie off and set aside. Repeat steps to create a second rectangle but DO NOT cut your yarn.

Now we are going to turn our work into a little tunnel for the drawstrings to go through. 

Row 10: Fold your work in half, hot dog style, so that row 9 and row 1 are touching. 

Making sure your stitches are lined up, SC row 9 and row 1 together with 40 SC.

Grab your first rectangle, fold in half, and begin crocheting row 1 to row 9 with 40 more SC giving us 80 total SC in this row. (80)

Join into the top of the first SC. CH 1. Do not turn.

Now we are going to attach our ears. I show this in detail in the video that goes with this pattern.

Row 11: SC 10

Grab your first ear, fold the first row (with 10 stitches) in half, lining up the first 5 stitches with the last 5 stitches.

The next 5 SC are going to be made going through the ear and the backpack stitches.

Starting on the folded edge of the ear (so the inside of the ear is facing in instead of out), SC 5, going through the 2 ear stitches and the backpack stitch.

SC 10 stitches (this will be the space between the two ears)

Join the second ear with 5 SC just like you did the first ear but this time start with the two edge SC. (So the inside of the ear if pointing towards the middle o the backpack and not facing out.)

SC 50 (so 10 more on the front side of the backpack and the back 40 stitches)

Join into the top of the first SC. CH 1 turn your work.

That gives us a total of 80 stitches in the round.

Row 12: SC 1 time in each stitch around. (80) Do not join into the first stitch and chain one. we will be working in a continuous round for the rest of the backpack.

Pro tip: Use a long piece of scrap yarn in a contrasting color to mark where the last stitch in each round is.

Rounds 13-56: SC in each stitch around (80)

After round 56 you may notice your last stitch isn’t in the corner of your bag. SC until you get to the top left corner. For me this was 10 more stitches.

Flip your back inside out, line up the bottom sides of the bag so it is completely flat and symmetrically with your strap tunnels. CH 1.

Then SC the bottom closed with 40 SC going through the front and the back stitches at the same time.

Tie off and sew in your tails.

Crochet Bunny Backpack Straps

Now it’s time to attach our straps. I will be using cotton cord for mine. Other options are crochet icord, like I did in the dino backpack crochet pattern. Or large yarn like I used in the witchy backpack crochet pattern.

Cut two pieces of cotton cord about 50-52 inches long.

Pro tip: Too long is better than too short.

We will be feeding one strap into the right side of the front tunnel and out the right side of the back tunnel.

The other strap will go inside the left side of the front tunnel and out the left side of the back tunnel.

Using a crochet hook. Feed one strap through the front tunnel and back out the back tunnel so both tails of the strap are on the same side of the bag.

Repeat for the second strap, this time both tails coming out on the other side of the bag.

Using a crochet hook, pull each strap tail into the inside of the back, at the bottom corners, and knot each one together.

Try to get your knots in the same spot on each set of straps.

Crochet Bunny Backpack Pattern – Pom Pom Tail

Now to add our little bunny butt pompom!

Using a pom pom maker, mine is a clover 65, wrap the yarn around one arm of the pom pom maker.

Pro tip: If you want your bunny butt to be extry floofy you can wrap yarn around both arms of the pom-pom maker, but one side is sufficient and lets the tail sit nice and flat against the bag.

When tying off your pom pom maker, make sure to pull the tails out the side opposite from the arm you used. So it’s on the back of your finished pom.

Pop out your half pom, trim any crazy bits, then attach to the center bottom of your backpack.

I attached mine about 10-11 rows up from the bottom.
