How to Make A Chunky Crochet Bobble Blanket – Free Pattern

Follow this free crochet pattern to learn how to make this chunky crochet bobble blanket and add crazy texture to any room!

We are ending one of the craziest years of the century and I thought why not go out with something huge, heavy, chunky, squishy, and amazing?

Im not one to boast, but this new chunky crochet bobble blanket checks all those boxes!

I had a heck of a time designing this one. I originally estimated 10 skeins of yarn for this guy… I need to learn to pay attention to skein size… NOT ALL SKEINS ARE CREATED EQUAL!

After all the rides on the struggle bus though, it finally came together and I am absolutely obsessed with the outcome.

You can find the ad-free pdf version of the pattern here

And for my visual learners, the full video tutorial here.

Here’s what you will need to make your own chunky crochet bobble blanket

MATERIALS

– Mighty Stitch Super Bulky Yarn
5 colors- 8 skeins each- 40 total skeins. I used the colors Spruce, Blush, Gulfstream, Canary and Pucker.
– Fable Fur Yarn
3 skeins. I used the color Falke.
– 12 mm crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors

*I have linked the supplies I used in the materials section above.

STITCH KEY (US TERMS)

SC = Single Crochet
CH = Chain
BS= Bobble Stitch (explained below)
HDC= Half Double Crochet
YO = Yarn Over
* to be repeated

SPECIAL STITCHES

Bobble (BS): *yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook* Repeat 3 more times. Now you should have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook. (do not chain after this, just go straight into your next stitch)

HDC in the Camel Hump: Stitch is just a regular half double crochet, the only difference is the placement of the stitch. I’ll do my best to explain this here in the pattern but it’s probably explained best in the video that goes with this post.

How to change colors

Work your SC as normal but stop right before finishing the stitch, with 2 loops on your hook. Pick up your next color and pull it through the 2 loops on your hook, CH 1 and turn. Continue crocheting with your new color.

Gauge: 8 stitches by 8 rows in single crochet = 4.5″ by 4.5″ square.

Finished Dimensions: approximately 55″ X 43″

BEFORE YOU START– Yarn Subs

I realize 40 skeins of yarn at 4.99 each is a crazy expensive crochet project for most of us. I would love to see this pattern made using a different super bulky yarn like Bernat Blanket Yarn or Lion Brand Hometown.

You can also pull multiple strands at once and create the same effect as a super bulky weight yarn. Don’t be limited by the price of the yarn used in this pattern.

Chunky Crochet Bobble Blanket

Body

Starting with your first color- CH 74.
This will result in the body of your blanket being about 40″ long, before the border is added.

Pro Tip: If you want to adjust the size of your blanket as long as you start with an even number of chains and an odd number of stitches you’re golden.

Row 1: Skip the chain closest to your hook and HDC in the back bump back down your chain. Ch 1, turn. (73)

The back bump part is optional, if you are unfamiliar with this technique you can just crochet as normal. If you are interested in learning, check out the video that goes with this pattern.

Row 2: HDC in the first stitch. HDC in the camel hump of the next 71 stitches. HDC in the last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (73)

Putting a regular HDC stitch in the first and last stitches of these rows will help you get a clean edge to your chunky crochet bobble blanket.

To find the camel hump, look for a horizontal bar on the face of each of your stitches. I show this in detail in the video that goes with this post if you need more help.

Row 3: HDC in the first stitch. HDC in the camel hump of the next 71 stitches. HDC in the last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (73)

The camel hump is a little harder to find in this row since the row is going in the opposite direction. Use this photo for guidance and reference the video if you need more help.

Row 4: *SC in the first stitch, BS in the next stitch*. Repeat that all the way down, ending with a SC. CH 1, turn. (73)

Pro tip: You will probably have to add a new skein of yarn during the bobble rows. You can use your preferred method for adding new skeins or check out the video to see how I do it.

I ended up doing a magic join after a few rows and that gave me fewer tails to sew in at the end.

Your bobble stitches will pop out on the RIGHT SIDE of your work. You will be looking at the WRONG SIDE.

When finishing out the last SC of row 4 switch to your next color.

This completes our repeat for the entire blanket.

Repeat rows 1-4 until you have 60 total rows.

Row 61: SC across creating a nice edge to your blanket. (73)

Sew in all your tails.

Chunky Crochet Bobble Blanket Border

Join your Fable Fur yarn into one of the corners of your blanket. I like starting in the bottom right corner.

Row 1: SC up the right-hand side of your blanket. YOu will have to create your own place for your hook to go since this is the raw side of your work.

I think 5-6 stitches per each colored stripe would be good. You kinda have to play around with it a little bit to cover up the spots where you joined a new color.

When you reach the top right-hand corner, place 3SC in that stitch to create a nice rounded corner to your blanket.

SC across the top of your blanket, putting 3SC in the top left-hand corner, then SC back down the left-hand side of the blanket.

Place 3SC in the bottom left-hand corner and SC across the bottom of your blanket.

End the row by putting 3SC stitches in the bottom right-hand corner. CH 1. Turn.

Row 2: SC in each stitch around. Continue to place 3SC in each of the corner stitches. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: SC in each stitch around. Continue to place 3SC in each of the corner stitches. Tie off and sew in your tails.

PHEW BABY take a look at your masterpiece! Is this not the squishiest most luscious thing you have ever made?!

I have been crocheting on and off for about 5 years now, and I just can’t seem to follow written instructions! I have bought 3 beautiful crochet books but it just baffles me!! So I follow YouTube videos and that does the trick. I fell in love with your cactus cushion first! It is so cute!! And such an 3asy video to follow. Thanks Ashley. 😊
